When you replace a fuel pump, it’s important to determine what caused the previous fuel pump to fail. Not diagnosing the problem can lead to more of the same in the future. For proper operation and longevity, it is critical to have a clean fuel system. If there are any signs of contamination, follow the manufacturer’s service information to thoroughly clean the fuel system. When replacing a fuel pump, you need to check for proper electrical connections, pressure, volume, and current. The specs that don’t measure up require further investigation into the entire fuel system. When servicing an electric fuel pump, always replace the strainer. Also, inspect the inline fuel filter for contamination, which could restrict proper fuel flow within the system. Maintain proper fuel levels Maintaining proper fuel levels aids in cooling the pump, which, in turn, adds to its longevity. It’s important to remember that constantly running your vehicle with a near empty fuel tank can cause the pump to fail.
Fuel pump signs of wear can include: poor engine starting characteristics, slow response when accelerating, intermittent power loss, excessive noise, vibration while driving, and/or fuel gauge reading incorrectly. Fuel contamination is one of the top reasons for fuel pump failure. However, contamination has many other partners in crime that can help seize the functions of the fuel pump. Additive breakdowns, rust, scale, and even the delamination of the fuel tank liner can clog the pickup strainer or inline filter. Issues with a fuel pump can be caused by: internal electrical shorts, a sticking fuel tank float, and/or damaged or corroded electrical components. Make a service appointment if your vehicle shows any of the following symptoms (they can indicate a major issue with your fuel pump and/or fuel system): 'Service Engine Soon' light is illuminated, improper engine idling, hesitation, or stalling, excessive exhaust smoke, abnormal engine noises, and/or noticeable fuel odors.
GM Original Equipment (OE) Q: Do I need to buy a specific version of this pump to fit my particular vehicle?Refer to a parts catalog for specific applications. Q: Are there benefits to replacing my fuel pump with an original equipment fuel pump?Original equipment fuel pumps have gone through the same rigorous testing and meet or exceed the specifications of the production pump your vehicle was built with. I was able to install the pump fairly easily by lifting the bed on my 2000 Silverado. The only snag was replacing the fuel pump power connector but I was able to unsnap a few of the cable ties and solder on the new provided connector beside the truck. The pump includes some crimp connectors but I didnt trust those to not corrode or vibrate loose. I live in SC so the rust was very minor but if you live anywhere near the salt belt I would plan to replace the locking ring ACDelco TR14 GM Original Equipment Fuel Tank Sending Unit Lock Ring at the same time.To make the install easier, I would buy new fuel line locking clips along with the pump, but I was able to salvage the old ones from my previous pump.
