Granted, it uses the Thunderbolt 2 interface, which is rare on everything except professional Windows workstations and Apple Macs (MacBook Pro and Mac Pro).

The faster interface lets users transfer and actively work on data at more than 1,000 MBps.
auto air conditioning repair glendale caThis is enough to transfer hundreds of gigabytes in seconds, or work on multiple HD and 4k UHD video streams simultaneously.
european auto repair reno nvIf you need to transfer a plethora of files posthaste, or deal with very short deadlines for your video projects, then you need the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2.
ac window unit freonIt's our new Editors' Choice for desktop-class external hard drives. G-Technology G-Dock ev with Thunderbolt LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt (1TB SSD) The Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 is a metal clad, semi-portable drive, just like the LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt.

This time around, the striated metal body of the drive is painted black, echoing the color scheme of high-end desktop workstations like the Apple Mac Pro (2013) and HP Z1 G2. Considering the Thunderbolt-only interface and its monochromatic styling, the drive seems tailor-made for Mac users. The chassis is small, measuring about 3.5 by 1.75 by 5.5 inches (HWD), with an external power brick that must be used with the drive. This puts the drive's portability at a slight disadvantage to bus-powered models, like the Promise Pegasus J2 (which can run without external power), even though the Pegasus J2 suffers a significant performance penalty when running without an AC adapter. The Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 is still much smaller than other desktop-class drives like the G-Technology G-Dock ev with Thunderbolt and the LaCie 5big. View All 7 Photos in Gallery Inside, you'll find a pair of PCIe solid-state drives (SSDs) connected to a motherboard. These are the secret to the drive's performance, which is much faster than even 10,000rpm hard drives.

The SSDs are paired, so the drive can support RAID Level 0 (aka striping), RAID Level 1 (mirroring), or JBOD (Just a Bunch of Drives). RAID 0 is the default setup for speed, though you can change the setup with OS X's Disk Utility. The drive is formatted for HFS+ out of the box, but you can reformat for exFAT for use with Windows 8 PCs. There are installers for Intego Backup Manager Pro and LaCie Private-Public (a AES 256-bit encryption program) bundled, but these are superfluous since the drive is really designed to be a blazingly fast file transfer (sneakernet) or scratch drive (i.e., a work drive for temporary files). The device comes with a three-year warranty. The Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 is the fastest external drive we've ever tested in PC Labs. It scored an insane 1,068.2 MBps write and 709.3 MBps read on our AJA System test. These numbers were the highest we've seen, with a much higher throughput than the LaCie 5big (677.2 MBps write; 645.2 MBps read) and Promise J2 (665.2 MBps write; 723 MBps read).

The performance showed an even larger gap on the BlackMagic Disk Test, which has a larger test file. The Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 returned 1,099.1MBps write and 1,135.2MBps read scores, absolutely plastering the LaCie 5big (742.2MBps write; 650.9MBps read) and Promise J2 on bus power (396.5 MBps write; 454.2 MBps read). To put this into perspective, the internal flash storage on the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch we used for testing also got left behind on the Blackmagic test (658.9 MBps write; 723.7 MBps read). Transferring a 1.22GB test folder via drag-and-drop to the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 took two seconds, almost too fast to even bother registering. This is a far cry from the 44 seconds that the USB 2.0-based Western Digital My Passport Studio drive took to copy the same folder. If there's any drawback to the Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2, it's that it is expensive on a dollar per GB basis, compared with rivals. Typical USB 3.0 1TB drives like the Seagate Backup Plus are priced at under $150 for the same 1TB capacity.
