Click here to order! The Multifunction Information Display (MID) may have bad LED segments and can no longer be clearly viewed. This part can be removed easily if you know how to do it. If you want to remove the IHKA panel you need to remove the MID first. The IHKA control unit is the brains of your HVAC unit for your car. It controls A/C functions, heater functions and mode door operation. IHKA is the fully automatic climate control system found on most E39 sold in the North American market. It has an interior aspirator fan to blow air over the interior temperature sensor so don't be surprised if you hear and humming sound when you get the panel out or plug it back in during re-installation. Remove the volume control knob (green arrow) by pulling it straight out. At the 6Â'oclock position insert a 2mm Allen key and press it into the internal screw. Rotate the Allen key 90 degrees counter clockwise and at the same time pull on the MID unit. The MID unit should pull out the center of the dash.

Note: if you are only replacing the MID unit you can stop here. If youÂ''re going to replace the IHKA control unit continue to read the following steps. Reach into the MID opening and from behind push the IHKA control unit towards the gear shift leveler. The unit should pop out. You can turn the ignition key on, apply the brakes and move the shifter reward to get it out of the way but you need to use wheel chocks or apply the parking brake so the vehicle does not roll if you are on an incline. You donÂ't need to do this. There is enough room to pull out the IHKA unit and get access to the connectors. Rotate the IHKA control unit to expose the rear. You will see 4 connectors (green arrows) that need to be unplugged to remove the unit. Squeeze the small black electrical connector on the left and pull the connector straight back. Squeeze the two tabs on each side of the three pin connector on the right side of the IHKA unit and pull to unplug it. This connector may be tight.

The last two connectors in the middle of the IHKA unit are the cam lock type. Push in on the center locking tab and pull the lever over it. As you rotate the lever the connector will pull out of the unit so you can unplug it. Do the same for the final black connector. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Be careful when rerouting cables and wiring as before so they donÂ't get pinched when re-installing the IHKA or MID unit. Click here to order!
