Friedrich makes residential and commercial room and central air conditioning and ductless split systems. Friedrich is privately owned and headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. Friedrich was founded in 1883 as a furniture company. Founder Ed Friedrich soon shifted from there into refrigeration, with an emphasis on food refrigeration. In 1952 the company expanded its focus to include air conditioning. In 2006 Friedrich opened a new manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico, which made it the only remaining manufacturer of room air conditioners in North America. Friedrich's headquarters was relocated to a 22,000 square foot facility in 2010, while remaining in San Antonio. Friedrich produces room air conditioners under the brand names Chill, Breeze, WallMaster, Uni-Fit and others. Friedrich sells large output ductless units, such as the packaged terminal air-conditioner (or PTAC), and wall-mount and portable air conditioners as well. The Kuhl, which the company calls a"technologically advanced" commercial-grade room air conditioner, is available in Energy Star qualified models and allows units to be accessed remotely using a computer or smartphone.
