Many cooling companies' waiting lists are hundreds deep, causing the big hold up. It didn't take long for Ron Harrison to feel the temperature climb inside his normally cooled northeast Wichita home Friday morning. "Well the air conditioner quit working wasn't running at all so I knew I had problems," he said. All of a sudden worries and questions flooded his mind. "How long is it going to take to get fixed? What it's going to entail and how much is it going to cost?," said Harrison.  He's like hundreds of people across Wichita quickly finding out that getting an air conditioner repair man is a tall order during the summer swelter. KAKE News called several cooling businesses in Wichita the wait list for some is as long as two weeks."We don't mind we certainly live for this time of year," said service technician Chris Wilson. 

Wilson has been working nearly non-stop since the heat wave started for Dan's Heating and Cooling."Typically we find a lot of dirty units, a lot of lack of maintenance," Wilson said. "We find a lot of capacitors that have blown up from the heat."However, there are things you can do to keep your air conditioner running smoothly before a potential break-down such as replacing dirty air filters. "A clean air conditioner will run at about 20-percent cheaper operation cost than a dirty one," Wilson said.  You can also check refrigerant levels and keep air conditioner coils clean by running a hose through them while the unit is off. Harrison was smart enough to get a maintenance plan so when his air broke he was put on a priority list. His wait time was only a few hours instead of the end of the line. "Two weeks would have been a little long, I would have found somewhere else to go," he said.  If you find yourself waiting to get your air conditioner fixed, there are temporary options.
