The home improvement giant Lowe’s is making its Manhattan debut with two high-tech locations more influenced by Apple than by Ace. And the urban-friendly approach is more than skin deep. The Upper West Side location opening the week of Aug. 17 at Broadway and 68th St. measures just 30,000 square feet, a quarter of the typical suburban Lowe’s.

There may only be 10 refrigerators on display, for example, but a shopper can stand before the seven-foot-high “Next Aisle Over” touchscreen in the large appliances section to virtually inspect dozens of other models.

The customer can tap the screen to spin a full-size image of a fridge 360 degrees to study it from every angle, or swipe the door open and closed to poke around inside. They can do the same with ovens, air conditioners and other large appliances. The Manhattan Lowe's stocks commuter-friendly collapsible products, like Casabella mops, that are easy to take on the subway. Lowe’s spent 18 months researching on how New Yorkers live and shop to nail what Manhattanites need — and how they schlep it home. This has resulted in products like the Casabella series of fold-up mops, brooms and dustpans, which are as easy to transport by subway as they are to put away. To avoid mansion envy, these new Lowe’s offer fixtures and appliances tailored to microscopic studio apartments, such as the Vigo bathroom vanity set that is less than 18 inches across, or an eight-foot-long kitchen counter that comprises a sink, 18-inch dishwasher, oven, stovetop and a wee refrigerator and a freezer tucked into two drawers under the counter.

Lowe’s urban-renewal also includes city-friendly services such as a free potting station for indoor plants. “When you don’t have a yard, who wants to carry a big bag of potting soil home just to pot one or two plants?” asks Ricciardi. “Our soil comes free. Pick your pot, pick your plant, and we’ll put it in right here for ya.” Other features include a free blinds-cutting service that allows the curtains to remain in the box as they’re trimmed so they’re easy to transport home; a self-service key-cutting machine, which is a must in a land of apartments and multiple significant others; and plenty of storage and organization solutions for space-strapped customers. Urban-friendly services at the new Lowe's include free plant potting. This Lowe's can also cut blinds to scale while they're still in the box.
