Polytechnic High School cheerleading captain Elizabeth Olalde-Ortega thought her squad was in trouble this summer when her coach asked to meet them in front of the school.“OK, guys, I don’t know what you did,” coach Rayneta Dotson told them in a somber voice. “I don’t know why you did it, but you have to tell your parents that you won’t be home for Thanksgiving because … you are going to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!”That dreamy moment was met with cheers, of course. Now the squad is working to raise $37,000 to make the trip to New York City a reality. The cheerleaders are promoting a gofundme page, car washes and the sale of T-shirts that say, “Get Loud or Go Home.”I feel like God has blessed us with a really beautiful opportunity. Rox Timmons, 16, Poly cheerleaderMeanwhile, the invitation is helping build a new sense of confidence for the southeast Fort Worth high school often described as an underdog. On Thanksgiving Day, the cheerleaders say, the whole nation can catch a glimpse of the squad and break with stereotypes about the urban school.“

It gives the kids hope that they can go places,” Assistant Principal Jeffrey Bartolotta said. “There’s a lot of buzz. It gives hope to a lot of kids in athletics.”Olalde-Ortega, 17, said Polytechnic students aren’t always met with a positive vibe when people find out they go to an inner-city school.

Poly is this and Poly is that,’ but when they really get to be a Poly Parrot, they realize who we really are and how we come together.”

The parade invitation is also building a sense of community with other high schools in Fort Worth, said Dotson, who has gotten kudos from people with ties to Dunbar and Arlington Heights. “The Poly cheerleaders inspire our local community of Poly, east and southeast Fort Worth with their sense of determination and Poly pride,” said Tobi Jackson, school trustee who represents District 2, which includes the school. She pointed out that the cheerleaders will be the first from the school district to march in the parade. Dotson said she hopes the cheerleaders’ new notoriety will bring more fans out to football games. With more fans in the stands, maybe the football team will get more community support, too, she said.We have the swag, which means we are pumped. We have a lot of spirit for our school. Before that, the last playoff trip came in 1990.Hope was the reason Dotson brought up the idea of trying out for the nationally televised parade.

“It was one of those things that I was like, ‘Man, when I was a kid, I wondered if I could ever do that,’ ” said Dotson, who wanted to inspire the cheerleaders to seek personal challenges. “I wanted them to know that if you work for it, you can do whatever you decide to do.”So the team tried out via video.“I’m so excited to go to New York because this is my first time,” said Diamond Prince, 17, a senior on the squad. “It’s going to be a good experience for me.”Now, comes the hard part — earning the money needed to get to the Big Apple.Reaching these goals will help the students stay focused on building a better future, Dotson said. “This is giving them an extra push to let them know, ‘I can do whatever I want to do and I have a coach behind me,’ ” Dotson said.Tell Us What You Think Questions/comments about our business, policies, investor relations or credit issues? In its day, the downtown Macy's department store with its wide opening to 7th Street was considered state-of-the-art.Today, it looks stuck in the 1970s, and shoppers like Angel Camacho feel it."I have been into this place several times," he says. "It feels a little closed in, a little stuffy." Squeezed between two high rises and covered with a translucent canopy, a new developer says it is time to raise the lid on the complex they are calling The Bloc. The developer, the Ratkovich Company, showed off renderings Tuesday of what they're going for: sun-splashed eateries, boutiques and a fitness center.

Among the new retailers is a Nordstrom Rack. There will be a passageway to the 7th Street metro station.
