Every vehicle comes with a manufacturer recommended air pressure or inflation pressure for its tyres. This information is included in the owner’s manual, vehicle door edge and doorjamb or fuel door. With air pressure lower than the prescribed amount leads to instability, high fuel consumption and causes premature wear and tear of the tyres. High tyre pressure on the other hand causes bumpy rides and affects the life of the tyres. The incorrect amount of tyre pressure can also lead to tyre bursting and cause accidents with disastrous consequences at times. To ensure safety whilst driving it is key to maintain the correct amount of air pressure. This will also prolong the tyre’s life span and increase fuel efficiency. How much air should be pumped into a tyre depends on several factors. No ideal or correct tyre inflation pressure can be recommended for vehicles plying on Indian roads.

This is because the inflation pressure recommended by manufacturers varies from vehicle to vehicle, model to model and is influenced by factors like the application of the vehicle, the tyre size, the weight to be carried by the tyres, considerations of fuel economy, speed etc. Most passenger cars, mini pick up vans etc. have a recommended air pressure range between 27 and 32 psi. The tyre pressure for SUVs and full size trucks or heavy vehicles is generally higher due to the larger tyre sizes and greater weight of these four wheelers. Their approximate inflation pressure is around five to eight psi counts higher than that of smaller vehicles. It is important to note that there are separate tyre pressure ratings for rear tyres and front tyres. The air pressure for tyres will also differ depending on whether the vehicle is loaded or unloaded. If the car is loaded with extra cargo, passengers etc. a higher psi count is generally recommended to offset the added weight. The air pressure needs to be checked at least once a month as it tends to drop naturally and through the use of the vehicle.

It is also important to note that the prescribed tyre inflation pressures are always for cold tyres and therefore, air pressure should be checked when tyres are cold to get a true reading on the psi count. Although the manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressure may not be absolute as some extra pounds can easily be added according to the requirements of the driver at the time, it is generally considered best to follow the guidelines and recommended psi counts for a safe and comfortable driving experience. The table below lists the tyre air pressure recommended by different vehicle manufacturers based on the tyre size of different car models in India.
