Daikin Industries Ltd. has set its sights on North America and is willing to open the purse strings to be the top heating, ventilation and air conditioning manufacturer here. The Japanese company’s American arm, Daikin North America LLC, publicly introduced its first American manufacturing line in Houston on Thursday. As Daikin indicated earlier this week, it is now manufacturing a group of residential cooling products and some of its high-end “VRV” commercial cooling products in Houston, and, as a result, is creating about 250 local jobs. Daikin did not disclose the cost of this investment. Daikin is manufacturing its products at Goodman Global Group Inc.’s massive 525,000-square-foot cooling plant near the 610 Loop and Highway 290. Since Daikin closed its $3.7 billion acquisition of Houston-based Goodman in 2012, the companies have spent the last year working on a plan to integrate their operations. Now, David Swift, the president and CEO of Goodman and the head of Daikin’s North American operations, said the companies are ready to launch a comprehensive North American HVAC takeover plan.

Goodman is known as one of the largest domestic manufactures of residential and light commercial HVAC products in the United States. Daikin, on the other hand, is one of the largest HVAC manufacturers in the world, but before it acquired Goodman, had a scarce U.S. presence. Combined, the companies plan to be the No.1 residential, commercial and industrial HVAC player in America. Daikin North America now has three U.S. brands it manages: Daikin, which is being marketed as a high-end premium brand; Amana, which is a mid-range brand; and Goodman, which is a more cost-effective, lower-end brand. At the Houston cooling manufacturing facility, the company will produce Goodman products as well as the new Daikin products, which are targeted for U.S. customers. The majority of the cooling products are for residential use, however, Daikin is betting on its “VRV” product being a gamechanger for commercial cooling. The Daikin “VRV” product has technology that allows commercial buildings to cool their space more efficiently, explained Swift.

For example, a VRV system allows different areas of a building to have different temperatures. “Homeowners and business owners will soon be able to experience the benefits of the Daikin brand, including energy-efficient performance and industry-leading technology,” Swift said.

The company plans to begin producing its VRV commercial products at the Houston facility in a few months. And, in the future, Swift said he could see residential, high-tech VRV products being produced at the Houston facility. “This is one of the rare occasions, at least in my experience, when an Asian company who has acquired an American company is taking its technology from Asia, bringing it to the U.S., and, as a result, is creating jobs in the U.S.," Swift said. "The Daikin acquisition of Goodman ... will fundamentally change the industry in North America."When you live in Florida, having a central air conditioner installed is pretty much a must.
